Unlikely Starters Eye Super Bowl Berth
By Harry Hodge
Case Keenum vs. Nick Foles. With a shot at the Super Bowl on the line.
If you had made this statement at the beginning of the season, you’d have heard a few chuckles. But no one’s laughing now.
Keenum, a journeyman quarterback who starred at the University of Houston, bounced around the league before being pressed into starting duty for the Minnesota Vikings. He’s now part of NFL lore, with a last-second 61-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs to crush the spirits of the New Orleans Saints and send his Vikings squad to Philly for the Conference Final.
Foles is in a slightly different situation, himself thrust into the starting role following an injury to second-year stalwart Carson Wentz. The Eagles themselves enjoyed a dramatic win to get past the Atlanta Falcons last week, thanks to a goal-line stand by a heroic defence.
Regardless of who emerges victorious from the contest, facing the AFC champion in the Super Bowl will be a tall task, which in all likelihood be Tom Brady and the New England Patriots defending their title. But for this week, let’s live vicariously through Foles and Keenum, who no one expected to make it this far.
