Saigon Rugby 10s Preview
Cheerleaders, Pool Parties, Free Flow Bars, Live Rugby Test Telecasts and more… Somehow Al Frescos and the Saigon Geckos had to take the Saigon Rugby 10s to another level and this is it.
The first installment redefined international sport in Saigon. Looking to build a long term event the second promises to be no different. Sport In Saigon takes a look into all you need to know for this weekends festivities:
Early Start!! One day is no longer enough to contain the awesomeness so the “Crazy Pool Party” kicks off from 2pm Friday the 16th at Maia Bar at Saigon South Golf Course. AFG will provide a finger food buffet, a full bar, plus bags of entertainment… slippery poles.. DJ.. and surprises!!
New Teams International Add Flavor – The tournament has increased from 10 teams last year to 16 this year. With Alfrescos sponsored functions on both the Friday and Saturday nights, there will be plenty of off field excitement as well. Both fields at RMIT will be used with both adult and kids play zones set up.
All In Day of Entertainment – Dtwo sports bar will have a bar set up showing the All Blacks v Sth Africa Test Match. They are doing a deal – 1,000,000VND transport for D2 Sports Bar (beer on board), all food and drink all day with bus back to D2 at 5pm.
The After Party Legacy Continues – Last year’s after party re-defined the concept of after party and this year promises to outdo itself. Queen Hall in D4 will be the scene of this year’s party. Last years event was remembered for a raging rugby crowd, cheerleaders, midgets and more. Let’s see what this year’s party is remembered for!
Sport In Saigon caught up with Geckos captain Benny Armstrong for some insights on the weekend (ed-let’s hope his predictions are better than last time!)…
SIS: How have the Geckos been travelling Benny?
Benny: The geckos have welcomed many new recruits since August and have the best training numbers we have had in years. We’ve been training 3 times per week leading into the tournament so if we stick to our game plans we should do well against our ASEAN partners and hopefully compete with the bigger teams from Hong Kong and Australia
Benny:So who are the tournament favorites?
SIS: The defending champions (Hong Kong Scottish) are the team to beat again. Their seconds team actually beat us in the 3rd place game last year. There are some dark horses from Malaysia and the Philippines that should do pretty well as well.
SIS: What are the Geckos hoping for from the tournament?
Benny: For the geckos, progressing through the pool stages into the top 8 (quarter finals) would be a good achievement. Realistically, anything beyond that would be a bonus.
SIS: What can the crowd expect this weekend?
Benny: There will be some top-class international 10’s rugby with some ex-Australian Wallabies running around. It will be a good mix of semi-pro teams and old boys (Over 35’s). Plenty of on and off field entertainment. Should be a cracking day!
