Heat look to torch Slingers to kick off ABL season at home

By Harry Hodge

The road to ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) supremacy for the Saigon Heat and Singapore Slingers kicks off this weekend at CIS Stadium in District 7.

The Heat are seeking their third straight playoff appearance under skipper Tony Garbelotto, who has secured the return of American stars David Arnold and Lenny Daniel, along with the signing of former rival Christien Charles, a former ABL import MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. The joint will be rocking as the Heat also welcome back Swedish-Vietnamese sharpshooter Stefan Nguyen, who nabbed a VBA title with the Danang Dragons against fellow Heat star and local product Trieu Han Minh, who spent the season with the Ho Chi Minh City Wings.

The Slingers are still stinging from a narrow defeat to the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the ABL Final last season, and will be looking to return to the title matchup. Leon Kwek, Xavier Alexander and former Heat big man Justin Howard are all back for another run, so the Heat will need to bring their A-game in this Asian hoops tilt.

The Slingers and Heat tip off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 at CIS Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City. Visit www.saigonheat.com or visit the team’s Facebook page for more info.
